Orioles acquire catcher Teagarden from Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have traded catcher Taylor Teagarden to the Baltimore Orioles for minor league right-hander Randy Henry and a player to be named.

The teams announced the deal on Thursday.

Teagarden hit .235 in 14 games for Texas last season. He has played 118 games for the Rangers over the last four years and has thrown out nearly 31 percent of runners who have tried to steal. He turns 28 this month.

The Orioles like Teagarden’s ability behind the plate and see him as a solid backup for Matt Wieters.

The 21-year-old Henry was 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 29 relief appearances at Class A. The Orioles also designated lefty Pedro Viola for assignment.

Jones hits go-ahead RBI single in 12th, but Gregg…

“Every time you come to the park, you expect the best. But things didn’t go out way at the end,” Bell said after the Orioles’ record slipped to an AL-worst 47-76. “I don’t like the outcome. You’ve got to put them away.”

Hisanori Takahashi gave up a one-out walk to Bell and a single to J.J. Hardy in the Orioles’ 12th before retiring Nick Markakis on a popup. Manager Mike Scioscia then brought in Fernando Rodney, who gave up Adam Jones’ single to right and didn’t bother to back up the plate as Hardy scored behind Bell on a throwing error by right fielder Torii Hunter. But Rodney (3-5) still ended up with the win.

“I don’t think like we felt that we were out of it tonight,” said Mark Trumbo, whose two-run homer in the ninth inning Thursday night beat the Texas Rangers. “We got a little momentum going in the 12th inning, and that obviously helped. Hopefully we’re just going to ride this into tomorrow and keep doing what we’re doing.”

Takahashi gave up a leadoff single in the 11th to Baltimore’s Matt Wieters before getting the force at second on the surprise bunt toward the mound by Reynolds — who has only two sacrifice bunts in his five-year career and none since July 26, 2008, with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Robert Andino then grounded into a double play.

“It wasn’t my decision. He did it on his own,” manager Buck Showalter said. “I’m not going to bunt him there with where we were in the order because I know what his capabilities are. I appreciate the fact that he was thinking from a team standpoint, but it didn’t come from the dugout or the third base box. That’s not what cost us the ballgame, so it’s not something we’re going to dwell on.”

Gregg (0-2) gave up a leadoff single to Erick Aybar in the bottom half and hit rookie Mike Trout. Hank Conger laid down a sacrifice bunt toward Bell, whose wild throw allowed Aybar to score. Bell then made a diving stop on Peter Bourjos’ grounder in the hole, checked the runner at third and threw too late to get the speedy Bourjos.

“I played with him coming up through the minor leagues, so I knew he was fast,” Bell said. “After I got the ball, I just wanted to make sure that the runner wasn’t going. But he’s really fast, so you’ve got to get rid of the ball.”

Gregg walked Alberto Callaspo to force in the tying run, and Patton gave up Abreu’s scoring fly to deep center on a 1-1 pitch.

Tommy Hunter gave up six runs and 10 hits over 6 1-3 innings and did not strike out a batter in his fourth start for the Orioles, who acquired the 25-year-old right-hander in a trade with the Rangers on July 30. He was moved up in the rotation to fill in for Jeremy Guthrie, who is missing at least one turn because of shoulder stiffness.

Orioles vs. Blue Jays: Baltimore falls again to an…

BALTIMORE — Tommy Hunter, the Baltimore Orioles’ starting pitcher on Friday night, hadn’t pitched in that capacity since last October, when he was with the Texas Rangers and started Game 4 of the World Series.

Baltimore’s starting second baseman, Cesar Izturis, hadn’t appeared in a big league game in more than three months.

Mark Reynolds made his third start of the season at first base and Josh Bell made his first start at third. With first baseman Chris Davis and shortstop J.J. Hardy unavailable, Manager Buck Showalter’s bench consisted of three players.

This is what things have come to for the Orioles, who lost another game, this one by a 5-4 margin to the Toronto Blue Jays in front of an announced 18,770 at Camden Yards.

Meantime, another key pitcher went on the disabled list. The status of Hardy (sore left ankle) and Davis (undisclosed matter) is uncertain. But rookie starter Zach Britton is on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain. His absence will continue to force Showalter and pitching coach Rick Adair to find a combination of five starters capable of giving the Orioles a chance to win.

That task has been elusive. Hunter, the burly right-hander whom the Orioles acquired from the Rangers last Saturday along with Davis for reliever Koji Uehara, will get an extended look in the rotation. In his first opportunity, Hunter allowed four runs on eight hits and a hit batter over four innings in taking the loss.

The Orioles (43-66) took an early two-run lead on Adam Jones’s career-high tying 19th home run in the first inning, but that was one of their lone highlights as they lost their third straight and their 12th in 17 contests, and fell to a season-worst 23 games under .500.

After dropping the first game of a 10-game homestand, the Orioles are now 3-7 against the Blue Jays (57-55) this season and 6-22 against them over the past two years. They’re also just 13-30 against American League East foes this season.

That’s all for today.
