| Brian Roberts Out Three Weeks With Concussion | |
By Grant Brisbee – Editor
Follow , and Like Baseball Nation on Facebook. May 24, 2011 – Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts spent time on the disabled list last season with concussion-like symptoms that might have been a result of Roberts whomping himself in the batting helmet with his bat. While he spent the first part of this season dealing with back and stomach issues, it looks like his head is a concern again. From Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com:
Roberts saw a concussion specialist, who decided that more rest was needed. The Orioles’ second baseman was originally put on MLB’s new seven-day DL for concussions, but it’s likely now that the Orioles will transfer him to the 15-day list in order to keep a replacement for Roberts on the 25-man roster longer. Concussions are a tricky, tricky thing — and it’s not like there’s a guarantee that they get better over time. So this is a pretty scary story, especially considering that Roberts thinks he hurt himself this time by sliding head-first into first base — hardly something that causes a lot of concussions around the league. The Orioles will use Robert Andino in Roberts’s place in the lineup, where he will team with J.J. Hardy at the keystone. | Orioles summon Adams, Reimold; send Berken down
BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of second baseman Ryan Adams and recalled outfielder Nolan Reimold from Triple-A Norfolk for their interleague game against the Washington Nationals on Friday night. After the Orioles’ 17-5 loss, reliever Jason Berken was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Berken allowed six runs in an inning against Washington. The 24-year-old Adams was in the starting lineup and went 1 for 4 with a run scored while batting ninth in his major league debut. He was hitting .303 with two homers and eight RBIs for Norfolk. Reimold was batting .237 with six homers and 22 RBIs. Left-hander Troy Patton was designated for assignment by the Orioles before Friday’s game. Patton and right-hander Chris Jakubauskas, who was optioned to Norfolk after Thursday’s 13-0 loss to the New York Yankees, both pitched in the lopsided defeat. Jakubauskas and Patton had replaced first baseman Derrek Lee (strained left oblique) and second baseman Brian Roberts (concussion) on the roster Thursday. Lee went on the 15-day disabled list and Roberts was placed on baseball’s new seven-day DL for concussion-related symptoms. Gotta run!. Posted in orioles-news | Comments Off

| Orioles’ Roberts out with back spasms | |
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP)—Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts(notes) is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against Minnesota with back spasms. Roberts missed most of last season due to a herniated disk in his back, but says that the spasms he first felt a few days ago are unrelated to last season’s injury. He said that he might be able to play if this was the regular season. The second baseman slid headfirst into first base in Monday night’s game against New York, and that may have aggravated the condition. Early in spring training, the 33-year-old Roberts missed three days with a stiff neck. He played in only 59 games last season because the back injury and a concussion. | Spring training 2011: Brian Roberts back at Baltimore Orioles’ practice
Updated: February 26, 2011, 1:24 PM ET SARASOTA, Fla. — Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts has returned to the practice field after missing three straight days with a stiff neck. Roberts received an ultrasound treatment on his neck Saturday morning after participating in the team’s annual photo day. He then suited up and practiced for the first time since Tuesday. Roberts had to get the approval of the athletic training staff before returning to the field. He said Friday that it would require a “group effort” to determine whether he could work out. Normally a stiff neck in February isn’t a matter of concern, but Roberts played in only 59 games last season because of a variety of injuries, including a herniated disk in his back and a concussion. Roberts probably won’t play when Baltimore opens its exhibition schedule Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton.

| Orioles not yet concerned about Brian Roberts’ health | |
Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts missed a third consecutive day of workouts Friday because of a stiff neck, according to The Baltimore Sun. However, the team isn’t concerned about its leadoff man.
“I don’t have any information that would suggest that it’s a concern at the present time,” Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail told the newspaper. Roberts was limited to 59 games last season because of back problems, though he says his neck issues aren’t related to that back injury. X-rays earlier this week were negative, and Roberts was diagnosed with muscle spasms. “It’s getting better every day. It’s definitely better than it was a couple days ago,” Roberts told The Baltimore Sun. “It’s the time of the year where you just want to get it completely gone before you go back out there again.” Roberts hit .283 with 16 homers, 79 RBIs, 110 runs, 30 stolen bases and an AL-high 56 doubles in 159 games in 2009. In limited duty last season, he hit .278 with four homers, 15 RBIs, 28 runs, 12 steals and 14 doubles.
